bits. – OnePlus 3 launches globally

The much awaited follow up to last year’s self proclaimed “flagship killer”, the OnePlus 3 is here. At 12:30pm EST today OnePlus launched their new flagship virtually via the downloadable OnePlus 3 VR app. Viewers were rewarded with the opportunity to order the new flagship up to 2 hours ahead of its availability through the website. Despite a few initial hiccups, like a last minute update of the VR app and some page load errors, we were able to grab a unit for ourselves to review (stay tuned for that).

The design of the OnePlus 3 should come as no surprise after the numerous leaks in the past few weeks. Gone is the removable and swappable back plate of the earlier models; it has now been replaced by an aluminum unibody design. Although the design can easily be seen as generic, there’s no denying the OnePlus 3 is a handsome device. The anodized aluminum unibody will be available in graphite (black front panel) and soft gold (white front panel).

The alert slider, which debuted on the OnePlus 2, makes its return and the volume keys are now found below it. The 5.5″ 1080p Full HD screen is retained but it is now using Optic AMOLED technology under 2.5D Corning Gorilla Glass 4. The capacitive home button and fingerprint sensor combination is now more oval-shaped and is faster than ever.

Both the 6GB of DDR4 ram and Snapdragon™ 820 processor should please many power users. The onboard and non-expandable memory is now a standard 64GB featuring high speed UFS 2.0.

The rear camera has been upgraded to a 16MP sensor which features hybrid Optical and Electronic Image Stabilization technology. The laser autofocus gives way to the more common PDAF (phase detection autofocus).

OnePlus is highlighting its new Dash Charge technology onboard the OnePlus 3. The technology allows for a 60% charge at just 30 minutes of charge time. OnePlus also boasts lower charging temperatures compared to the competition.

All in all, we’re quite impressed and excited for the OnePlus 3. It is available to Canadians now for $519 (plus tax) with free shipping to boot.
